The Game
Beach tennis is already an established professional sport in Europe and has been popular for many years before migrating to the shores of California. It started on the Mediterranean and made its way to Aruba eventually landing on the shores of the USA In 2005. It was founded by an organization called Beach Tennis USA and a pro tour was created.
The beach court dimensions and rules are as follows:
The game is played in the same dimensions as a beach volleyball (30’ x 60’).
The net is slightly lower than a volleyball net (5’ 10”).
Standard tennis rackets and depressurized tennis balls are used.
Scoring: 8-game pro set / no add scoring (meaning 40 all sudden death).
One serve only and must land within the boundary line / Let serves are take-overs.
The ball is not allowed to bounce.
Beach Tennis – much like Beach Volleyball – is doubles only. The game is based on hitting and returning serves, different types of volleys and shots while using footwork in the sand. Anyone can learn and master the basic shots and game strategies in a very short time.
Its four times easier to learn than tennis or volleyball – but it is a fun and challenging learning curve to master the sport.
The game is based on who can out-rally the opponent either by hitting a winning shot or forcing your opponent to miss. Simple!
